DJ, Dutchman, producer, multiple label operator and all-round general busybody Gert-Jan Bijl, or Gerd as he is better known, is the man behind the third release to come from James Cotterill’s London label, Illusion Recordings.

NY STOMP: The moniker is most definitely an indication of the ingredients of this release; a ‘Ronseal effect’ of sorts. The original tracks on the EP splice together classic NY house flavour with raw, jackin’ beats reminiscent of ‘Little’ Louie Vega/ Todd Terry, whilst the remixes offer deeper, dubbier alternative takes.

First track, ‘NY House Trak,’ was one of the choice selections for our first EHP mix (still available on Itunes! Follow links on the homepage for more info) and for good reason. The track contains everything you could possibly want or need to get down; a hefty beat, extended single-note synth lines, bubbling bass notes and stabs like you wouldn’t believe. WOOFT.

Hotly tipped Italian producer Nicholas provides a remix which, overall, remains relatively faithful to the original, despite straddling a deeper, less manic groove.

On the title track “Can You Feel It,” the pace shifts down a gear with all our composite elements feeling darker, sparser and all very end-of-night-esque. Similarly, the exclusive digital remix by label boss James Cotterill and Ross Elliott takes apart the track, stripping it down to atmospheric record spinbacks, moody synth stabs and spaced-out echoes.

The real triumph, however, is courtesy of deep house don, DJ Aakmael, who drops a meandering organ drive over the stabs and takes the track into a deep, personal, post-midnight moment to yourself.

Long time revered King of the Edit, Kris ‘Katronik/ Karimza/ K2′ Klayton, has just dropped this percussion-heavy, dub-infused Radiohead re-edit of Feral today via his Facebook page stating that if it gets “‎9,000 likes” he’ll release the full edit for free download. Needless to say: Get. Liking.

This message came to me in the form of a soundcloud email this morning: “OK guys its been a while, my first original piece of music in over a year…” Now, while it might seem startling that producers are now resorting to promoting their own releases rather than relying on their label, it’s this very personal(ish) touch that actually reminded me that this release was in need of a review. Thanks for the heads up BB.

So, currently mooching around in Leeds, Bonar has had some highly acclaimed releases on labels the likes of Under The Shade, Future Classic as well as the dominating force that is Needwant lately. Bonar evidently throws himself into the full production and promotion of his releases; as well as his evident talent for PR, he can be heard laying down the breathy, hypno-comatose vocal on the title track, You Were Away, which grooves along with hand claps, key stabs and a smooth bass bump. The instrumental allows an opportunity to fully appreciate these elements in their own right but, admittedly, it is one of the remixes in particular that really enhances the original takes.

Hamburg trio, Space Ranger, provide the first re-jig of the title track, creating a hypnotic disco pump with the blending of subtle cowbells, vocals and a relentless four-four beat. However, it’s a fairly straight forward affair. It is, in fact, the Maxxi Soundsystem take on Lip Therapy that we’re ALL about. Slow rising synths, beats and bleeps, and then the breakdown at the two-minute mark followed by a deep and smooth bass roll and extra “Yeh, Yeh’s” for added effect. The perfect crowd warmer. EHP favourite, John Talabot, who has been busy, locked away in the studio for the winter (Psst – that’s where his label, Hivern Discs, gets it’s name – ‘Hivern’ meaning ‘winter’ in Spanish) – rouses himself out of hard-working hibernation to supply us with this track, ‘So Will Be Now’ featuring the inimitable Pional.

Previous releases have showcased a collage of disco breaks, tough drum machines, Rhodes riffs, silvery guitars and African chants, and ‘So will Be Now’ is no different. With a looping pitch bent vocal, uplifting key changes, ethereal atmosphere, lazy bass stabs and an irresistible groove, we are expecting nothing less than complete brilliance once his forthcoming album (due out on Permanent Vacation in the coming months) finally drops.
